I’ve been holding on to this for a long time

I took it last May from a blog I started reading (and still read frequently), and saw it today stashed in a Word doc I’d saved with interesting quotes.

“Do not be critics, you people, I beg you. I was a critic and I wish I could take it all back because it came from a smelly and ignorant place in me and spoke with a voice that was all rage and envy. Do not dismiss a book until you have written one, and do not dismiss a movie until you have made one, and do not dismiss a person until you have met them. It is a f***load of work to be open-minded and generous and understanding and forgiving and accepting, but, Christ, that is what matters. What matters is saying yes.”
~Dave Eggers, The Harvard Advocate

It seems particularly important today because I need to remind myself to say yes. Or rather, just let things slide…

The RSVP concept isn’t a difficult one, or so I thought. Punctuality isn’t a strong suit for everyone invited, so it seems. I’ve always been really good about rsvp’ing to anything. I dunno, just deep-rooted Southern manners, I suppose.

The reason for my anal retentiveness is mainly because we only reserved so many chairs. We only have so much food and liquor. It’s not even my money getting spent and I’m freaking out like someone’s about to set hundreds of dollars on fire and watch it burn in a fiery mass.

And to quote someone very near and dear to me, ” It is like wrangling cats trying to finalize our headcount and make sure everyone has a place to sit, etc.”

Sigh. But I must let it go. Say yes. Or sit quietly and stew. And the attempted cat-wrangling will continue.

On the flip side, my bachelorette party is next weekend. Drunken girlie madness to ensue, let’s hope.

Exactly one month from today, I will be Mrs. Oscar Velez.
